An excellent work machine for writers is also a perfect laptop for completing your everyday needs and boosting your productivity. So here is the reviews of the most powerful, portable and convenient laptops for writers
What makes the best laptop for writers?
#1. Apple MacBook Pro (Best laptop for writers)
Since your writing laptop needs to go places with you there’s absolutely no need to move around with a dead weight on your shoulder when the Apple MacBook Pro weighs just about 4.02 pounds. With a thickness of 15.55mm, this amazing writing machine is ultra-thin and very easy to carry.
Everything comes with a price, right? If you want the best laptops for writing, you better be willing to splurge. There is no getting around it, it’s expensive, but an amazing machine.
If you want to invest in the best equipment for your business, this is the machine. It is a top-end laptop that carries a premium price. If you plan to use your laptop for only writing, then there is no doubt that the Apple MacBook Pro is overkill. However, if you also take photos and high definition videos, then this will make your editing a breeze. The Apple MacBook Pro is certainly the best laptop for writers and photographers.
But why? The MacBook Pro laptop ranked number one for its high range of computing performance thanks to some of the most advanced Intel core processors commercially available. The 8 core intel core i9 keeps the laptop purring through pretty much anything you can throw its way.
The battery clocks in with an awesome 10 hours of battery life per charge, more than enough to do a days work in a coffee shop or sipping mojitos by a pool in Cuba. And depending on the configuration you buy, it has either 256GB or 512GB internal SSD flash included, but this can be added to up to 4TB if required.
You can enjoy high-speed performance even while dealing with high-level processing works such as editing 4k video, creating code, 3D modeling and much more.
And of course, one final thing I have to mention is the screen. One thins Apple are amazing at are screens. The eye-wateringly gorgeous retina display with a 2,880 x 1,800 resolution is perfect for any kind of photo editing or video work you have to do.
The major downside to come out of Apples stubbornness to concede to customer demand is the lack of port options. While 4 thunderbolt ports are impressive, we’d like a bit more variety of options. It is possible to get adaptors for pretty much and type of connection. However, it does kind of leave your laptop looking like Frankenstein’s monster with lots of bolted on peripherals sticking out. Also, at the price range, you’d like to think an adaptor of two could be included.
So in summary, if the price does not matter, this is the market leader and you cannot go wrong with this computer. Apple’s MacBook can really handle any type of task, especially related to writing and blogging.
- Upgraded processor
- Butterfly mechanism keyboard
- Excellent audio quality
- No memory card slot
- 9th-generation 6-Core Intel Core i7 Processor
- Brilliant Retina Display with True Tone technology
#2. ASUS ZenBook 13
The Asus Zenbook is a lightweight, slim, and portable laptop which has some perfect features that make it perfect for writing and blogging. For the price point, it packs a lot of power, and I would consider one of the best value laptops on this list. Not the cheapest, but when comparing the specs to the price, you get a lot of bang for your buck.
Starting with the specs, the ASUS Zenbook comes with an 8th generation Intel i7-8550U 1.8 GHz Processor and 16GB of RAM. This is plenty to keep your laptop purring while working with large projects such as editing pictures, videos or large documents.
While we’re talking about large documents, the internal storage is pretty generous too with a 512GB SSD hard drive. The inclusion of SSD instead of a traditional hard drive helps with super-fast app loads and near-instant boot times. One thing to note though, the memory is soldered to the motherboard. This means that should you run out of space, you cannot upgrade. But that’s what external storage and the cloud is for.
Another feature I love is the fingerprint sensor that is built into the touchpad. It just makes things quick and easy, and after all, isn’t that what we all want? You will not need to type your password every time to log in. It just requires a single touch to wake up your ZenBook.
Not that it should matter, but when it comes to elegance and sophistication, the ASUS Zenbook is a fine-looking machine. Extremely thin at 15.9 mm and weighing under 3lbs, it is lighter than many competing ultra looks that cost more money.
The battery gives you nine hours of battery life, which considering its size and weigh something special.
One thing I need to point out is that some people report that the ASUS ZenBook does create a bit of background noise. I would certainly recommend looking for users reports of this in the Amazon reviews before making your final decision, but overall, a solid machine.
- Built-in fingerprint sensor
- Excellent display
- Super fast
- It can get noisy
- Powerful & fast for effortless on-the-go computing: 8th generation Intel Core i7-8565U processor,...
- Durable & reliable: meets the ultra-demanding MIL-STD-810G military standard for reliability and...
#3. Dell XPS9570-5632SLV-PUS 15.6
This great-looking laptop comes with an i5 processor and a 1080p display. This Dell laptop is a remarkable multimedia laptop and easily one of the best laptops for writers. It also boasts brilliant design and plenty of ports. Perfect if you need to connect your mouse, keyboard and external monitor. This is the set up I have when working at my home desk.
This slim gadget measures just 17 mm of width and a little under 4 pounds (1.8kg). A great option if you are searching for the best portable laptop for writers.
This model of the Dell XPS features a glare-free screen coupled with gorgeous 400-night brightness. This means that not only will your words jump off the screen at you, that cheeky Netflix episode you may watch to celebrate another great day of writing under your belt will look great too.
The fast 8GB RAM will keep it running like a dream, although high-end video encoding may be a bit of a test for it if you are doing other tasks at the same time.
The supplied 256GB SSD hard drive is a bit smaller than I would like to see, but nothing that an external drive or cloud storage subscription won’t fix.
What about battery life? With its 4K display running the battery will run, it runs dry before 7hrs is up. For this price tag I would have expected slightly better performance, but most of the time, it should be enough.
Overall it’s a nice package, simple design with an impressive performance that sits at about the correct price.
- High-class performance
- Superb studio-quality sound
- Battery life isn’t great
- 8th Generation Intel Core i7-8750H at 2.20 GHz Processor (9MB Cache, up to 4.20 GHz)
- 32GB DDR4 at 2666MHz Memory, 1TB Solid State Drive, Windows 10 Home (64-bit)
#4. Microsoft Surface Book 2
We’re looking at the best laptops for writing, so that doesn’t mean they will always be cheap and Microsoft’s Surface Book 2 is another example of that. The price is high, but what a machine you get.
When the initial Surface Book originated in 2015, it was one of the finest pieces of technology accessible at that season. It was one of the first of its type in the detachable 2 in 1s niche. There had been some detachables before, but they tended to be more of a tablet with a keyboard attached. The Microsoft Surface Book 2 is different. The GPU is on the keyboard, so while they connect, it seems like a full-sized graphically powered laptop.
There are so many variants available for this laptop, we are focussing on the Surface Book 2 13″. We’d recommend the i7 processor with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD for top-end performance. But, if you would like to save money and get a less expensive setup, you will still be fantastic buying a portable laptop of writing on the go.
The trackpad and keyboard are excellent smooth and responsive. It’s also worth knowing that there is also a pen available as an optional extra, great for digital artists but probably not necessary for average users.
And how about this. Microsoft guarantees 14 hours and 30 minutes of local video playback at a full charge. That’s a pretty solid boast.
In summary, Microsoft’s Surface Book 2 is one of the best detachable 2-in-1 hybrid laptops. Not only that, but it is also among the best as a laptop alone or a tablet alone, what all 2-in-one’s strive to be.
- High-performance hybrid
- Built-in with Dolby audio
- Detachable keyboard
- It’s a bit expensive
- Microsoft Surface Book 2 Features a 7th generation Intel Dual Core i5 Processor, 256 GB of storage,...
- Includes an Intel HD Graphics 620 integrated GPU; Full size SDXC card reader

It has a 13.3″ high-resolution retina display as much as four times when compared to the many pixels in an HD display, it’s stunning. Images are spewing with new levels of detail and realism. This also means it offers the Razor-sharp text clarity so it’s easy on your eyes.
Also, the keyboard in this notebook offers comfort and quick response for easy writing. It also has LED-backlit controls that have an ambient glow sensor. This helps you use your device even in low-light surroundings without eye-strain.

#7. Acer Aspire E15 – Best budget laptop for writers
If you are starting your writing career and don’t have a huge budget, this is the choice for you. The Acer Aspire E15 is one of the cheapest laptops for writers and bloggers out there and does not disappoint with performance.
If you’re looking for value, the Acer Aspire E15 is worth every penny you pay. While it may not be the most beautiful of laptops, and weigh a bit of over 5lbs (a bit on the heavy side for comfortable travel) on the inside it’s beautiful. It is home to an 8th generation Intel i5 processor and 8GB of RAM. You will struggle to find that combination cheaper anywhere else.
That means this budget laptop will easily handle essential blogging tasks such as editing documents, photoshop, web browsing and more. The keyboard that comes with a laptop seems to be very easy to use, and the screen is pretty too with a 1080p display.
Acer claims that the battery can last up to 12 to 15 hours, but you can expect around 6-7 hours with web browsing and writing. It comes with pre-installed Windows 10 Home which is one of the best OS of Windows you can use these days.
To sum it up, it is affordable for almost everyone and will perform pretty much any task related to writing admirably. It is a little bulky, so not ideal if you need to move around a lot, but for the price point, there isn’t really much to grumble about.
- 8GB Dual Channel memory
- Affordable pricing
- Wide port range
- It’s a bit heavy
- 8th Generation Intel Core i5-8250U Processor (Up to 3.4GHz)
- 15.6" Full HD (1920 x 1080) widescreen LED-lit IPS Display
#8. ASUS Chromebook Flip – Best Chromebook
ASUS Chromebook Flip comes with a 14″ touchscreen display. This 4-way Full High Definition NanoEdge display of 1920×1080 pixels offers ultra-narrow bezels at 5mm thickness around the sides of the HD display. This feature helps in fitting the 14 inches screen into the body of 13 inches Laptop. This display provides a cinema-like experience all squeezed into a smaller laptop footprint.
A 360-degree hinge is durable. To flip and adjust the touchscreen into a stand, tent, and to the tablet mode, you can use the Full High Definition (FHD) display. Talk about flexibility. If you’re tired of using the keyboard to write articles, flip the display over and switch to tablet mode. Three things to say about the screen, amazing display quality, compact and flexible. The downside of having a convertible laptop though is the higher risk of damaging the hinges and ultimately ruining the laptop as a whole.
ASUS Chromebook is a portable 2-in-1 convertible laptop giving excellent performance. It is built-in with a vivid 1080p display which is very bright and grabs the attention of the users.
This laptop comes with the processor Intel Core m3-8100y. It has two cores which are capable of clocking 1.1 – 3.4 GHz. This processor is capable of executing 4 threads at a time. If you use too many tabs or run different types of applications at the time for your work or study, it has the power to give you all those functions without causing dragged performance of some laptops.
You can’t expect a performance as sharp as the Intel Core i7 which can be thought of as the Alpha Dog of processors. Being one of the lower end processors, the Intel Core m3-8100y sacrifices performance to offer a better battery life. In terms of performance though, this processor puts up a good fight. This Chromebook Flip comes with 4GB RAM which is not enough for heavy multitasking.
- Premium Quality
- Backlit Keyboard
- Great performance with advanced features
- Fussy Touchpad
- Plus Chromebooks offer fast performance, smooth video calls and ample storage.
- The 14 inch Full HD Touchscreen NanoEdge display has a durable 360 degree hinge that can be used to...
#9. New Microsoft Surface Go
If you’re looking for an insanely portable laptop that’s packed full with all the aesthetics of modern technology then you should give the New Microsoft Surface Go more than a casual thought. This laptop is an amazing machine which can be either a tablet or a laptop, it’s 10-inch tablet comes with the latest Windows 10 and can be converted to a super-portable laptop when you attach the keyboard.
If you get your flashes of inspiration mainly while you’re out and about, you surely need to put them down and what better to do this than with an almost weightless and super portable laptop which can snugly fit into your handbag. The Surface Go is designed for this purpose as it weighs only 1.66 pounds with the keyboard and without the keyboard, it’s weight drops to 1.15 pounds, also as weightless as a feather.
A machine this light should also be very thin, that’s to be expected and yes it’s only 0.33 inches thick which means there’s not much room for ports. But you still get a USB-C port, a MicroSD slot which goes along with a headphone jack and a Surface Connect port for charging and docking.
The 10-inch design of the Microsoft Surface Go supports a relatively small keyboard but you’ll be surprised at how comfortable typing on this keyboard is. This small laptop also comes with a Surface Pen which is great for taking notes, making sketches, and quickly scribbling down flashes of inspiration just as they come. But you need you to invest an extra $99 to get the Surface Pen.
For everyday use, the Microsoft Surface Go performs really well and it’s fast as you’d expect thanks to it Intel Pentium Gold 4415Y processor and 4GB RAM. It also comes with a 64GB storage space. The Surface Go has a 5-megapixel front camera and an 8-megapixel rear camera and they both take very clear and beautiful pictures.
This very portable laptop can easily pass as the dream companion for every writer and blogger. But the battery life isn’t so great, with continuous web surfing it last for only 6 hours which is 4 hours less than what you get from other tablets and laptops in its class. 6 straight hours of work with one charge is actually good, imagine you started off work by 10 am with the Surface Go you can expect to work till 4 pm before another charge.
This laptop may be small but its 10-inch display is bright and colorful, its performance is top-notch, the keyboard is suitable for fast typing and the build portable yet solid. Now, what more can you ask for in a writing laptop?
- Small and portable with a very colorful display
- Comfortable keyboard and touchpad for fast typing
- Windows Hello for facial recognition
- The battery lasts for only 6 hours which is good but not great.
- Keyboard and pen come at an extra cost.
- Our smallest, lightest Surface yet. Sleek and slim, with high-resolution 10" PixelSense 1800 x 1200...
- Plenty of unplugged power. With up to 9 hours of battery life, Surface Go takes you from daytime to...
#10. Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop, 15.6″
Another strong performing laptop which is wonderful for a writing career is the Acer Aspire 5. This laptop comes with a powerful 8th Gen i5 processor packed in a stylish design and 15.6 inches display. If you prefer your writing laptop big to provide you with plenty of desktop real estate, then this 15-inch will do that just fine.
For a laptop of its size, you’d expect some form of bulkiness, but it’s not bulky at all and it’s one of those 15 inches laptops you can move from room to room. You can also fix it somewhere in your backpack and carry it along for a short trip as it only weighs about 4.2 pounds and it’s 18mm slim.
One disappointing feature of this laptop is its very poor battery life. Very unlike what you would expect from such a powerful computer, its battery lasts for only about 4 hours on a single charge which is just about half a workday.
Well on the bright side, the Acer Aspire 5 will beat your performance expectation, it can handle over 30 open Google Chrome tabs with Youtube videos without stuttering. Thanks to Its 1.6-GHz Intel Core i5-8250U processor, 1TB 5,400-rpm hard drive, Intel HD 620 graphics card and a RAM of 4GB.
The Aspire 5 has a very comfortable keyboard that’s stylishly designed for fast typing. It also has a 4.2 x 3.0-inch touch which recognizes the Windows 10 gestures like two fingers scrolling and three fingers tab swiping.
The 18mm thickness of the Acer Aspire 5 accommodates many useful ports. On the left side, you’ll find a Kensington lock slot, an RJ45 port, one USB Type-C port, an HDMI port, one USB 3.0 port, and an SD card slot. And on the right, you’ll find the power jack, two USB 2.0 ports, and a headphone/microphone jack. This is a great laptop and it definitely performs more than the average mainstream laptop.
- Solid performance
- Very affordable
- The battery life is below average
- 8th Generation Intel Core i5 8265U Processor (Up to 3.9GHz) | 8GB DDR4 Memory | 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD
- 15.6" Full HD (1920 x 1080) widescreen LED backlit IPS display | NVIDIA GeForce MX250 with 2 GB of...
Final Thoughts on finding the best laptops for writers
As a writer, you would need a performing laptop but these days writing is not limited to just words and letters. We love to upload photos and videos, MS Word, PDF and all and we supposed to edit and check those in certain apps. This being said, you need a laptop that has additional features and functions than a basic laptop to be able to perform those actions.
If you are in the starting state and have a low cost or budget, I highly suggest checking out the Acer Aspire E15 which provides decent performance for a much lesser cost. If you’re looking for performance as high as it can go and the price is of no importance, then may I suggest for you to keep an eye on the Apple. For better suggestions, happy to hear your comments.
